Alex Haley was a journalist, author and speaker born in 1921 in New York. During his childhood he became fascinated with the stories his maternal grandparents told him of their African kinfolk Kunta Kinte who was brought to America as a slave. Haley's fascination with his descendants caused him to research his family and published it into a novel called Roots. Haley also went back and traced the roots of his paternal grandmother, a plantation child. At 18, Alex joined the Coast Guard and spent 20 years in the service. Haley was the first person in the US Coast Guard with a Journalism title. Upon leaving the Coast Guard in 1959, Alex continued to write for magazines and published various articles.  Haley suffered a heart attack and passed away in February 1992.
