Giving From the Deepest Part: The Daylight Initiative

Blood diseases do not discriminate. They don't care how old you are, where you are from, what race you are, or how well you eat. They can target anyone at anytime and many are fatal if untreated, and blood diseases are no exception to this.

So what is being done? Early research discovered that a bone marrow transplant from a healthy donor can help fight the disease to the point of curing it. Unfortunately, donors cannot just be anyone; they must be a bone marrow match.

With the word getting out about the severity of Leukemia, Lymphoma, other blood-related diseases and the importance of bone marrow donors, more and more people are stepping up to donate. The amount of matches found among Caucasians is great but there are minorities and Mixed race individuals that cannot find matches because donors are scarce. This especially hits the Mixed race community hard, because of its genetic diversity. So few actually know about the opportunity to become part of the bone marrow donor registry.

That is where The Daylight Initiative comes in. The Daylight Initiative is a multimedia awareness program designed to inform those in the mixed race community about the opportunity enter into the National Marrow Donor Program's registry.

You can’t possibly imagine the devastation of blood diseases that take hundreds of thousands of lives each year- most of these lives could be given a chance with a bone marrow transplant.

If you’re a member of the Mixed race community, consider registering to be a bone marrow donor through program sites such as Be The Match, the National Marrow Donor Program at: http://www.marrow.org.

The goals of The Daylight Initiative are to organize a national bone marrow drive in a major US city, where people of all races can come to see if they are eligible to join the registry and for a simple cheek swab to be a potential donor for a blood disease patient in need of a bone marrow transplant.

The Daylight Initiative’s goal doesn’t stop there. They want to organize bone marrow drives in every major city in the US, bringing in millions of Mixed race and minority donors to the national registry. With that many donors on the list, imagine how many people can be saved each year.

To register to be a bone marrow donor or to see the requirements to be a donor, visit the Be The Match site and fill out the application. Their goal with the marrow drives is to encourage donation through a fee free means.

Bone marrow exists deep inside the bone where it sustains life in each human being. Be a bone marrow donor through The Daylight Initiative and give from way down deep to save a life.
