The Campaign for Assimilation

E-mail Print PDF

At the end of 2006, John Rocker, the controversial former major league baseball pitcher known for his racist remarks years before, created a campaign to promote foreigners to assimilate in our country. His reasons and intentions may seem understandable and even agreeable however many argue that his message--Speak English--stems from a racist standpoint and those who argue against him have continued to label Rocker as a racist bigot. But how do most of us truly view immigrants who choose not to adapt to our American culture and customs?

When in Rome, do as the Romans,” says Rocker on a televised Fox news interview. “When people vote with their feet--move into my country--just please assimilate yourself to my customs and my culture.

Fair enough statement. It is important that we do all that we can to contribute and to promote diversity so that we can avoid building walls within our nation and to avoid making other ethnic groups feel withdrawn. As a multicultural society, there is the necessity for dialogue because there needs to be a way for all of us to communicate with each other in order to coexist. If we can’t have this communication, then our society will crumble from our own ignorance; without diversity, society will be filled with nests ostracizing each other because of the lack of acceptance for each other’s cultures and customs, thus, creating separatism and re-segregation.

Blackface Aimed at Multiracials

E-mail Print PDF

I would first like to point out that anybody parading around in blackface should be censured because it is utterly demeaning and should not be "performed" by anybody at anytime. But, one must ask the question, "How does a foreign country such as Turkey come to portray President Barack as solely black?" It is no secret that our president has a white mother. So why? In a country with a relatively small black population, it is impossible for Turkey to have a similar black/white racial history as America does. In particular, the history I speak of is the convolution of mulattoes and African Americans. Since countries such as Turkey do not have the same kind of history that America has had, why would this man even consider regarding mulattoes and blacks as the same "race?" Now, I do not know what this particular video means to the masses of Turks or how it was perceived there, but here in America such behavior would result in quick ostracization. But this recent occurrence has not been the only public demonstration of blackface aimed at a prominent multiracial. Remember this:

Be An Illegal Immigrant for a Day?

E-mail Print PDF
A correspondent for The Guardian newspaper, Jo Tuckman, recently joined in on a very unique tour in the Mexican village of El Alberto, where she and many others spent the night at the US/Mexico border to feel what it’s like to be in the shoes of an illegal immigrant. When they reached the borderline, they scurried into a tight huddle behind bushes and rocks from being seen by the border patrol. They sat for a dreadful moment together, eyeing the flashing red and blue lights and each other, thinking this may be the coming of their demise. When the border patrol took off on vehicle, the group got up and continued on. Strangely, the video shows a simulated arrest of a man illegally crossing the border, being put down by armed guards and interrogated on the spot while handcuffed.

What is the actual point to this tour guide, you may ask? Well that’s what I’d like to know as well. But most of all, WHY do we need something like this in the world? Isn’t it enough for a nation to be burdened with an awful stigma; that everyone in this country, who is Mexican, is perceived to be a potential illegal alien? The bigger issue here is not just about illegal Mexicans or Central Americans in the United States but illegal immigrants from any nation in just about any big developed country.

The Horrors of His Namesake

E-mail Print PDF

For many cultures, naming your child is a very important thing. The name is everlasting and creates a definition of character and outcome for the child’s future. Names do not only help you stand out from the rest of world but also gives you a place in it, as well. It offers a sense of purpose and guidance along with giving a sense of personality and individualism. Family history can be passed down with a name, commemorating an ancestor; or perhaps even commemorating an influential figure in history. But what if you take on the name after someone in history who was deemed the absolute personification of evil? This person being, Adolf Hitler?

News broke out in the local press about a supermarket’s refusal of a family’s request to decorate a cake with the name for their three-year-old son, Adolf Hitler Campbell, with “Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler.”

The father, Heath Campbell, went on to say, “They need to accept a name. A name’s a name. The kid isn’t going to grow up and do what [Hitler] did.”

The Campbell family also have two other children who bare the names of JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell, 2, and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell, 1, who was named after the SS head Heinrich Himmler.

No one needs a reminder of what Hitler stood for and the suffering he casted upon many innocent people. The mere mention of his first name, alone, will cause a spring in your back to jump.
